Pro Tips: Ive fished several spinnerbaits from various manufacturers over the past 20 years of my tournament bass fishing and I can tell you with our SWL Mini-kits you cant go wrong. The SWL Mini-kit comes packaged with a four blade combo set, with blade sizes pre-selected to match the weight of the bait you order, giving you the ability to meet almost any situation head-on.
Not knowing your financial situation, i.e., single male bass chaser, or a newlywed, or possibly married with children, I first recommend our 5/16-oz. mini-kit in each of the following baits (except for our SB-302 and get that in the 9/16-oz):
- #103 White Shiner
- #107 Threadfin Shad
- #109 Blue Herring
- #214 Firetiger Perch
- #220 Rock Craw
- #305 Smallmouth Special
- #234 Bluegill
The reason I recommend the 5/16-oz. model in the mini-kit series is that its probably our best all around bait because you can fish it in skinny water as well as slow roll it deep with equal success. Keep in mind if you find yourself cranking this bait super fast in shallow water to keep it up out of the vegetation then you might want to increase your line size (and use a good brand name mono), because it provides greater water displacement and will actually help keep the bait higher in the water column. I prefer using no less than 15-lb test, but I usually fish 17- to 20-lb test and sometimes 25-lb test around real nasty stuff. I do recommend you avoid using fluorocarbons when trying to create lure lift because they sink, so increasing line size wouldnt mean much when using a fluorocarbon. Another technique is to add the next size bigger blade to give the bait more lift. The opposite holds true if you want to achieve greater depth; you can do a few things in reverse order, go to a size smaller blade or drop down in line size, or switch to a fluorocarbon or step down to a slightly slower gear speed in your reel or a combination of any of these things. One, some or a combination of these things will all allow the bait to achieve greater depth on the retrieve.
But lets talk about that super fast cranking statement for a moment. As tournament fisherman I think youve probably experienced first hand that at certain times no matter how hard or fast you crank a spinnerbait, you simply cannot keep it away from the fish. My reference to the super fast cranking is that usually we dont find ourselves doing that style of fishing for any length of time during our tournament day, unless its on purpose or we find that kind of speed is required in order to achieve a certain depth in the water column. Therefore I shared the other information relative to achieving lift with your spinnerbaits so you wont have to crank so hard and fast that your arm feels like its about to fall off... that is, unless you choose to do so which is something different all together. Lets get back to the baits though.
Now of course if $$$ is no object then I recommend a mini-kit in both our 3/16-oz and our 9/16-oz for all the baits, except our SB-302 as stated above.
The reason Id get both if possible is there are times when not only the weight, but also the overall profile of the bait do make a big difference in the amount of strikes you generate in a days fishing. So if you can afford to get both sizes you indeed are better prepared for any situation that you might encounter.
All of these recommended baits work well on our Finger Lakes because they mimic the primary bait fish which are Alewives, Smelt, Perch and Bluegills, and the secondary bait fish which are young Bullheads, young Trout and in Chautauqua Lake the young Walleye.
I also recommended our SB-302 Midnight Snack spinnerbait because its an awesome bait when ever the water gets off colored from the heavy algae bloom or just plain muddy from the rain run off or when the S/SW summer winds we get churns up the inside shore line of our Finger Lakes and makes them off-colored.
Ive fished no more than a couple hundred yards right behind other boats fishing the same wind blown churned up muddy inside shore line and Ive caught fish they didnt pick up. I firmly believe if I hadnt been throwing our SB-302 Midnight matched with a Black Zoom Super Chunk that I probably wouldnt have caught those fish.
I hope you find this information useful as you sample our SWL family of baits. I know once you try our mini-kits and discover the numerous combinations you can create; you too will soon realize the benefits of this lure system vs carrying numerous baits from other manufacturers.
In closing, I feel that for the working guys like you and me there is no better Spinnerbait value on the market today that delivers more for our hard earned dollars than SWL products. Enjoy and we too look forward to seeing you on the ABA American Fishing Tour in the 2007 season.
Oh and be sure to send in a good photo for our SWL Braggin Board when you land your first SWL lunker bass!
