When tying a steel leader to monofilament line, use the hook snell knot. Lay the leader on the tool, allowing the loop in the steel leader to act as a stop. When pressure is applied to the line, the knot grabs the steel leader with four wrap, instead of pulling against just one loop of the steel, which would cut the the monofilament fishing line.

Another way to do this is to tie the knot to the steel wire prior to making a loop in the wire, as shown below.
